Preparing for Antarctica

The trip to Antarctica is fast approaching. I have wanted to go there all of my life, at least since I read my first book on the Shackleton expedition when I was 12. I am going south with my partner artist Xavier Cortada. He is mounting a series of installations at McMurdo Station and on the South Pole (www.cortada.com/antarctica). I will be collaborating with him on these interdisicplinary projects.

In Antarctica I will be recording sound to create soundscapes to accompany Cortada's installations when they are exhibited. I will also be experiencing Antarctica as a musician and composer. I am taking a laptop (with Sibelius 4 and Digital Performer), a DAT recorder, a couple of notebooks, my pens and pencils, and a few books, just for my own work. I have already sketched out some things, but I can't concentrate very much right now. I also want to take essential music with me on an iPod. I'm still trying to pick the 25 CDs I will download into the Pod. Not easy...
